Episode 7: Life as Doulas with Ajaluna & Kiyona

Holding Space for Birth, Healing, and Grace

In Episode 7 of Awakened Living with Yali Giovanni, we step into the sacred world of doulas—women who walk beside others through life’s most profound transitions. Joining Yali are two powerful voices in the wellness community: Kassandra (Ajaluna) Carr of Ajaluna Wellness and Kiyona Miah of Kiy2Shanti

Each shares her unique story of becoming a doula and the heart-centered work that happens behind the scenes—physically supporting mothers, emotionally guiding families, and energetically holding space for new beginnings.

Birth as a Sacred Celebration

While many imagine birth as a tense or clinical moment, these doulas remind us that it can also be filled with music, laughter, and love. Kiyona calls it a “birthday party,” a joyful celebration where everyone—the mother, partner, midwife, and even hospital staff—can feel the positive energy of the moment.

The Power of Presence

For Ajaluna, the most fulfilling part of doula work is witnessing gratitude and transformation. “Even the fathers are amazed,” she shares. “They realize how sacred it is to have someone guide and hold that space.”

Both women emphasize how knowledge and emotional support can ease fear and anxiety for first-time mothers. “Sometimes people just need a safe space to say, ‘I’m scared,’” Kiyona adds. “That’s where the healing begins.

Beyond Birth

Yali also opens up about her work as an end-of-life doula—a role that mirrors birth in its sacredness and surrender. “When I see they’re ready to leave,” she says gently, “I tell them, ‘Go get your wings.’ It’s the same kind of divine transition.

Grace and Autonomy

The doulas agree that every parent should have the freedom to make choices about their birth and body. Whether it’s breastfeeding, formula feeding, or choosing medical interventions, the message is clear: give yourself grace and trust your journey.

Final Reflections

As Kiyona beautifully puts it, “Even in what I don’t know, I am enough.” That mantra echoes throughout this conversation—a reminder that compassion, intuition, and trust are the true tools of a doula’s work.
